Nowadays the market trend changes faster and product life cycle becomes shorter than ever, particularly in the electronics industry (電子及電腦產品行業). SMEs in the local electronics industry thus need up-to-date market information and consumer insight (collectively known as Market Intelligence) in a quicker way for business decision making (e.g. product to be sold and manufactured, pricing) and facilitating the selling in Hong Kong and China (內銷). This is particularly important in today’s economy downtime.

The sources of raw data of market intelligence have changed from traditional printed media (e.g. newspaper) to Internet especially the social media (e.g. Weibo, online forum, blog). Even the data is available on the web, many SMEs cannot leverage it due to the following major reasons:

  1. They don’t know how to gather and analyze the data on web. One feasible solution is to use Business Intelligence (BI) analytical tool, an information technology (IT) which specializes in gathering and analyzing the raw data of market intelligence from online media;
  2. They cannot afford the cost of BI analytical tool;
  3. They don’t know how to formulate the criteria/ model for BI to search/ gather and analyze the data from the web; and
  4. They don’t know how to interpret/ apply the market intelligence generated by the BI tool.

All these impact SMEs’ decision making capability and affect their competitiveness and survival.

With regard to this situation, Information and Software Industry Association (ISIA) is implementing an industry project “Market Intelligence for Electronics Industry” funded by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department. The Project aims to educate Hong Kong electronics industry SMEs to leverage Business Intelligence (BI) technology, so as to effectively analyze data available on the web, and then distill valuable market intelligence information for business decision responding to market changes. This results in strengthening their decision making capability and competitiveness. Ultimately this benefits the Hong Kong economy as a whole.

Objective

  • To demonstrate how BI technology can benefit the industry by providing useful market intelligence;
  • To educate the SMEs the skillset for formulating search criteria/ model and interpreting the market intelligence results for their future analysis;
  • To encourage more industry practitioners to use BI technology and in turn lowering the cost of deploying BI analysis; and
  • Ultimately to strengthen SMEs’ decision making capability, responsiveness to market changes, and thus their competitiveness in local and China market.
